A Look Back at November Hurricanes

Even though hurricane season is coming to a close, that does not mean we cannot see storms in November.

We are going to take a look at a few notable storms that occurred during the month of November.

Hurricane Kate (Nov. 15-23, 1985):

  • Category 3 storm – sustained winds at 120 mph
  • Brought flash flooding and power outages to the Carolinas
  • Destroyed man crops in Georgia (pecans, soybeans, and cotton)
  • Storm surge reached 11 ft. in parts of Florida

Hurricane Gordon (Nov. 8-23, 1994)

  • Killed over 1,000 people
  • Category 1 storm – sustained winds at 85 mph
  • Dropped 14 inches of rain in Haiti in one day
  • Name was not retired even though death toll was high

Hurricane Lenny (Nov. 13-23, 1999)

  • Most powerful storm on record during the month of November in the Atlantic Basin
  • Category 4 storm – sustained winds at 155 mph
  • 17 fatalities
  • Dropped 27.56 inches of rain in Saint Martin
