As many news organizations have already released, there is now a new massive iceberg floating around near Antarctica. The iceberg is roughly 6,000 sq. km. This iceberg is going to be moving slow, but it will need to be monitored so it does not cause a disturbance in shipping.

Calving is a very natural behavior for ice shelves. This is a natural balancing act between the snowfalls as well as the input of more ice from glaciers.
Many geologists are not worried about the development from the Larsen C ice shelf…just yet anyways. They will be monitoring how the ice shelf responds. At this stage, many geologists do not know if there is some larger-scale process that could be weakening the region such as warmer ocean water melting the bottom layers of the ice or if it was just a random episode.
