Many people use this analogy to describe very large amounts of rainfall or large rain drops…but can it actually happen? The answers is yes…and no. There have been reports of animals falling from the sky, just not cats and dogs.
The main culprits in these instances are aquatic animals, such as fish and amphibians. There also have been reports of worms and snakes. EW! Just think about walking outside during a storm and frog just falls in front of you. I personally am not a fan.
Here are just a few instances and where they happened:
- Fish and frogs – Rome, First Century A.D.
- Tadpoles – Japan, 2009
- Fish – Louisiana, 1947 (There were so many fish that fell out of the sky that they average one per square yard and cars were running over them)
- Worms – Scotland, 2011
- Snakes – Memphis, TN 1877
Yes while some occurred a while ago, a few happened relatively recently.
But the real question is how? There is just a hypothesis at this point in time. It is thought that waterspouts or tornadoes pick up these animals and then drop them elsewhere. I just hope that we only see rain falling from the sky here in ENC.
