There is a lot that is still unknown about lightning, but here are a few “colorful” types.
Red sprites are large flashes that appear directly above a thunderstorm. These flashes normally only last milliseconds.
Blue Jets are not associated with cloud to ground lightning like sprites are. They form a narrow cone-like shape out of a thundercloud. These also last a short time, normal tenths of a second.
Elves are disk shaped and occur in the ionosphere. These can be accompanied by sprites, but they are very different. These occur high above thunderstorms with cloud-to-ground lightning and last less than a thousandth of a second.
