Just how many thunderstorms exist?

Have you ever wondered how many thunderstorms form in a given year? For the answer, we turn to our colleagues at the National Severe Storms Laboratory. The NSSL is primary federal research laboratory dedicated to weather research, including forecasting & development of new weather equipment. These researchers have access to a wide variety of weather information, including statistics on storm formation.

According to archive data, 16 million thunderstorms develop each year worldwide. There are about 100,000 thunderstorms each year in our country, and about 10% of these cells reach severe levels. It just proves a point that we already know- thunderstorms are simply a part of life. That’s why we always have to be ready.
