Washington, DC celebrates July 4th

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s capital is alive with July 4th festivities.

But heavy rainstorms forced the cancellation of an annual July Fourth picnic for military members and their families on the South Lawn of the White House.

Still, many festivities in Washington are proceeding as scheduled, including a fife and drum corps, parade and concerts on the National Mall.

As morning rains cleared, the capital’s Fourth of July parade kicked off. The parade featured marching bands, floats and balloons with plenty of red, white and blue.

The U.S. Air Force Band performs this evening on the Washington Monument grounds. The big event is the “Capitol Fourth” concert on the west lawn of the Capitol, featuring Barry Manilow and the National Symphony Orchestra. President Barack Obama is scheduled to make brief remarks prior to fireworks.
