Police pursuit ends in head-on crash that kills 1, injures 3

ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say the driver of a tractor-trailer cab shot by police during a pursuit that ended in a fatal crash has been charged with aggravated manslaughter.

Union County prosecutors say Danny Clyde Burnam also faces vehicular homicide and reckless aggravated assault charges stemming from the pursuit in Elizabeth, New Jersey. His bail was set at $2 million. It’s unknown if he’s retained an attorney.

The chase started early Saturday after Burnam was involved in an accident.

Authorities say an off-duty county officer tried to stop Burnam and eventually fired one round from his service weapon, missing Burnam. Burnam struck several vehicles as he sped away.

Burnam then drove through a nearby police barricade. Two Elizabeth officers fired at Burnam, striking him at least once.

Burnam soon hit another vehicle, killing a man and injuring two.
