Greenville police make arrest after shots fired on Cotanche

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Shots were fired outside of a Jimmy John’s located beside East Carolina University on Tuesday morning.

The Greenville Police Department responded to a call at 1:45 a.m. involving shots fired in the 500 block of Cotanche Street.

Witnesses told authorities they saw a man, identified as Jonathan Williams, who appeared to be drunk and acting disorderly.

Police said witnesses saw Williams retrieve a gun from his car and fire several shots in the air.

Williams reportedly left in a white Chevy Silverado truck pulling a trailer.

Officers located Williams in a parking lot near Reade Circle and Dickinson Ave.

Williams was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm in city limits and common law going armed to the terror of people (both misdemeanor charges).

Williams received a $3,000 secured bond.

No one was injured in the incident, though students in the area voiced concerns.

“I don’t think it is OK,” said Jaquan Houser, an ECU freshman. “I don’t like the fact that it is close to campus. It makes me uncomfortable how bold they are because this is a busy road. Bullets have no eyes.”

ECU senior Kaely Churchill was out watching the game at the time.

“I was out at the Fire American Tavern out here on Fifth Street, having a few drinks with my friends for the Alabama and Georgia game,” said Churchill. “(I) did see some people out and about causing commotion.”

Another freshman, Haley Rafe, was near the area.

“Crazy things honestly happen here, so it does not surprise me really too much, but it is like crazy to think I was walking by probably when this happened,” Rafe said.
