Students competing in Onslow Co. Schools Chess Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Students in Onslow County are taking part in a chess tournament.

The Onslow County Schools Chess Tournament takes place Tuesday through Thursday.

Middle schoolers from all 8 schools across Onslow County went head to head, challenging one another in a game of intelligence and focus.

76 middle school students played against each other both individually and as teams.

Students have been preparing for the competition for months, with many picking up the game in elementary school.

“I like it because it’s a strategy game,” Breven Brill, an eighth grader at Hunters Creek Middle School, said. “You’re always having to think ahead. Sometimes you’re thinking in the moment and other times three steps ahead and it all depends on your opponent.”

4th and 5th graders are slated to compete on Wednesday, and 2nd and 3rd graders round out the week on Thursday.

“Chess helps you focus more on other things like homework and tests because this is a focusing game,” Johnny Jenkins, a sixth grader a Jacksonville Commons Middle School, said.

Winners from the middle school tournament are:

  • First Place Individual: Josh Rojas (Jacksonville Commons Middle School)
  • Runner Up Individual: Kaylub Zamora (Jacksonville Commons Middle School)
  • First Place Team: Jacksonville Commons Middle
  • Runner-Up Team: Northwoods Park Middle
  • Third Place Team: New Bridge Middle

The first-ever high school tournament will take place on Saturday.
