SWANSBORO, N.C. (WNCT) -Students in Onslow County put on a fashion show in honor of Earth Day, which is observed Saturday.
The recycle fashion show took place at Queens Creek Elementary. For the show, students made fashions from recycled items and wore them for those in attendance.
From a cowgirl to plastic bag dresses and even a robot made out of cardboard, the students spent days putting the costumes together.
“It gets their creative juices flowing,” Rebecca Harris, organizer of the event, said. “They have a lot of fun doing it. It also brings awareness to recycling, reusing and repurposing.”
Third and fourth-grade students participated in the show.
First, second and third place prizes for the best outfits were awarded.
4th grader Mary Kellum-Williams won first place for her Cinderella dress made out of recycled Food Lion grocery bags.
“My favorite thing about this was that I was able to take stuff that just normal people would throw away into the water and take those things and turn it into a nice dress,” Kellum-Williams said.
It’s the 3rd year of the “trashion” show.
