2 bodies found in Bertie County fire

AULANDER, N.C. (WNCT) — Two bodies were found in a home that caught fire overnight on the 800 block Charles Taylor Road, east of Lewiston Woodville, according to the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office.

Crews responded around 2 a.m., where a two-story building, a barn and another building were on fire.

Deputies arrived soon after when the bodies were discovered.

All three buildings were destroyed in the blaze.

Sheriff John Holley said it is too early to determine if it is a homicide investigation.

“All investigations, we go all out, just in case,” said Holley. “Leave no stone unturned. Just trying to get to the bottom and find out exactly what happened.”

Investigators said a couple in their mid-50’s lived at the home that burned down; however, deputies have not been able to identify the bodies that were found.

The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office, SBI and Lewiston Woodville Fire Department continue to investigate.
