Fire causes Martin County church roof to collapse

OAK CITY, N.C. (WNCT)- Flames were coming from a Martin County church’s roof when firefighters responders to a blaze overnight in Martin County, the Oak City Fire Department said.

Firefighters were called to Hatties Chapel Free Will Baptist Church at 5458 Hassell Road on the edge of Hassell in Martin County around 2 a.m.

Five minutes after, the roof collapsed. No one was inside and on one was hurt. Thirty-six firefighters from Hamilton, Robersonville, and Oak City fire departments responded.

The Sheriff’s Office, SBI and ATF are investigating because it was a church that caught fire.
