Plans for new Lenoir Co. animal shelter underway

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Plans for a new animal shelter in Lenoir County are officially underway.

A lot has already been bought off of Highway 258, and potential layouts are being considered.

The new shelter will include separate sides for cats and dogs in a controlled climate.

Lenoir County’s SPCA board members said the new space will accommodate incoming animals for safety and hygiene concerns.

“They’ll have more space,” said Sherry Tripp, animal shelter director. “They’ll have bigger cages. They’ll have more play areas. They’ll have better isolation areas and quarantined areas for the cats and the dogs if they should be sick.”

Board members expect construction to begin in the summer of 2017.
