GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – People across the East are waking up to bitter cold Friday which is expected to change dramatically in just a few days.
Old wives tales say changing weather makes people sick, so WNCT went to local health experts to find out if this is fact or fiction.
They say the weather can’t make people sick. They need to be exposed to the actual bacteria or viruses.
“There is an association of colds with cold weather. Now the warm weather should alleviate that, but I think that the changes back and forth, high to low I think are more of a nuisance than anything else,” said Dr. Paul Cook with the Brody School of Medicine.
Dr. Cook says there’s not much evidence to support the old myth.
“I don’t know that there’s anything scientific explanation for some of these things but a lot of times we find out that old wives tales are actually old wives tales because there’s some truth in it,” said Dr. Cook.
What the changing weather does impact is chronic or recurring pain. Barometric pressure and temperature change can affect joints.
