Goldsboro man charged with stealing from churches aiding Matthew victims

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCT) – A Goldsboro man has been charged with stealing from churches assisting Hurricane Matthew victims.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said Justin Howell, 27, took items from the Oak Ridge Church of God on November 2 and Mt. Carmel Church on November 14 while both churches were assisting Matthew victims.

Howell was arrested at the Wayne County Detention Center on Monday, where he was serving a probation violation.

Deputies said Howell also stole about $4,500 worth of property from a home on November 15. The victim told deputies he had been trying to help Howell after Howell lost his home to Hurricane Matthew.

Howell is also being charged with stealing blank checks and cashing them at a Johnston County bank in October.

Deputies said they located several of the stolen items at a Goldsboro business, and the majority of the stolen items have been returned.

Howell faces multiples felony charges related to the thefts.

He was being held in lieu of $80,000 bail.
