Syrians trapped in Aleppo post desperate messages on social media

BEIRUT (MEDIA GENERAL/AP) – Reports of more killings of civilians in the Syrian city of Aleppo on Tuesday prompted world leaders and aid agencies to issue dramatic appeals on behalf of trapped residents.

Appeals for sparing civilian lives came late Monday night after the Syrian military announced it had taken control of 99 percent of Aleppo, signifying impending collapse to rebel’s four-year hold over parts of the city.

Thousands of people in eastern Aleppo with no part in the violence “have literally nowhere safe to run.”

Tweets from journalists, activists and other civilians still trapped inside Aleppo reinforce fears of atrocities in eastern Aleppo in the final hours of the battle between military and rebels.

The United Nation’s children agency said in a statement Tuesday there could be more than 100 unaccompanied children trapped in a building under fire in eastern Aleppo, citing a report from an unnamed doctor in the city.
