ECU takes part in $170M national exercise study

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – East Carolina University is taking part in a $170 million study funded by the National Institutes of Health to better understand the body’s response to exercise.

“When we do our studies here, we’ll exercise a lot of people and not everybody responds the same,” said Joe Houmard, the director of the Human Performance Laboratory at ECU. “Some respond really powerfully, and some don’t respond at all. So why is that? Some person may be doing resistance training, another will be doing endurance training (and) those are all questions we need to answer and hopefully this study will help us do that.”

The nationwide study will target 3,000 people. About 140 of them will be from the Greenville area.
