Sheppard honored as American Rookie of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – East Carolina freshman guard Jeremy Sheppard has been named the American Athletic Conference Rookie-of-the-Week, league officials announced Monday. It is the first weekly award of his career.

The Richmond, Va., native averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in two games last week, while connecting on 63.6 percent of his field goal attempts including 7-of-11 3-point attempts.

Sheppard was the first player off the bench in Saturday’s 69-56 win over NC Central and scored double figures for the first time as a Pirate, netting 13 points and helped ECU remain unbeaten at home this season.  He made 3-of-5 shots outside the arc and distributed an ECU season-high eight assists after he opened the week with a nine-point, three-assist effort against Hampton.

Junior B.J. Tyson was also honored by the conference and named to The American Weekly Honor Roll for the third time in his career. Tyson became the fourth East Carolina player to reach 1,000 career points before his senior year and eighth player in The American score 1,000 career points, hitting the mark in the Pirates’ win over North Carolina Central. Tyson posted a game-high 17 points in the Pirates’ 68-48 win over Hampton while also distributing five assists.

East Carolina travels to play at No. 14 Virginia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before taking a nine-day break for final exams.
