Make it Monday: Christmas mantelpiece tips

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – We’re helping you decorate for Christmas in this week’s Make It Monday.

“The mantel is where the warmth of the household comes in,” said Coastal Fog co-owner and designer, Jennifer Lutz.

She’s offering some mantel decorating advice and says one of the most important aspects of a mantel is balance.

You need a focal point and keep symmetry in mind.

“It doesn’t have to be the same thing on either end, but you want the weight to feel the same,” said Lutz.

As far as colors and texture, Jennifer is inspired by nature and fresh greenery you can find in your backyard.

“There is a lot of pine around here, use floral wire and make bunches for your mantelpiece and other greenery like fur and spruce.”

Aside from greenery, popular trends right now include neutral colors and gold and texture like burlap.

Lutz added wrapped presents around the fireplace as well, which were low-cost to put together.

The presents are empty boxes wrapped with old music sheets, which were picked up a local thrift store, and finished with a bow.

“Also adding pops of greenery into your bow too or just a little trinket into something just brightens the package up and it’s super simple,” said Lutz.

Another way to save money is by incorporating items you already have and just adding touches of Christmas around them.
