Autopsy report reveals new details in Onslow Co. brothers’ deaths

MAPLE HILL, N.C. (WNCT) – The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the deaths of Onslow County brothers Deandre and Tyler Gilbert, who were found dead in May.

The medical examiner released the autopsy report for Deandre Gilbert, which shows he died of a gunshot wound to the head as did his younger brother Tyler.

The autopsy report describes how Deandre’s body was found in the woods just outside of Maple Hill, wrapped in two comforters with a measuring tape tied in a bow around his waist.

His brother Tyler’s body was found a short distance away.

The report said Deandre Gilbert was shot from the back of the head on the right side.

His blood tested negative for alcohol.

The victim’s mother reported them missing three days before their bodies were found.

“It is not a cold case, and we are still actively pursuing it,” said Maj. Chris Thomas, Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office arrested 23-year-old Steven McCarty in May on a different charge but is also considered a suspect in this case.

“We still have that person and a couple more persons of interest but not to the point that we would name them a suspect outside of the investigation,” said Thomas.

The office said it’s received numerous tips on the murders, some of which have been helpful, but there is no timeline for when more information will be released.

The Sheriff’s Office said they are still pursuing other suspects in this case.
