Manufacturing Day in Kinston showcases local jobs to students

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – More than 700 middle and high school students from Lenoir, Greene, Craven, Jones and Wayne counties spent their day in Kinston learning about different jobs opportunities in eastern North Carolina.

The students visited Lenoir County plants including Domestic Fabrics, West Company and Barnett.

From learning about how an airplane works to how to manufacture kitchen cabinets, SPX Transformer Solutions engineer Jason Nelson said there is a job for everyone in eastern North Carolina.

“Careers in these fields are available,” said Nelson. “You don’t actually have to go to Texas or Nebraska or anything. Jobs are right here in your back yard.”

Local companies like SPX Transformer Solutions want students to realize local companies want local people.

Senior Jare Williams said the event helped give him and his fellow students goals to aim for.

“In school, they tell you to do good but when you see things like this, it kind of let you know why you do good and what to aim for,” Williams said.
