Church donates backpacks to Pitt Co. students affected by Matthew

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Nearly 200 Pitt County students will get new backpacks thanks to donations from the Sycamore Hill Baptist Church.

After receiving an email that students impacted by Hurricane Matthew were still in need, the congregation jumped in to help.

In just two weeks they collected 164 donations.

The biggest donation came from the General Baptist Convention of North Carolina.

Pitt County Schools lead social worker Cassandra Campbell said it negatively affects children’s behavior to see other students with nice things.

“If they can go to school and feel just like everybody else, which they are — they’re just facing a financial crisis in their home — it makes them a better student,” Campbell said.

The church is still accepting donations.
