NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – City leaders in New Bern gathered Wednesday to officially open a new 600 foot section of the Riverwalk.
The ceremony was the culmination of a years of waiting and planning that cost the city around $75,000.
New Bern Mayor Dana Outlaw said they hope the next section of the Riverwalk will encourage more visitors to come to the town. He also hopes it will encourage a healthier lifestyle for everyone.
“We feel like we want to connect our neighborhoods. We want people walking more, we’re looking for a healthier New Bern,” Outlaw said. “We’re looking to have more gardens around New Bern, more sidewalks, safety factors.”
Outlaw said there is still work to be done to make the city a safer place to walk.
He said he has already spoken to some people who’ve utilized the new portion of the Riverwalk.
