NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – The Bate Foundation gave a cancer center opening in New Bern within the next few years a $1 million check Tuesday morning.

Carolina East Heath System president and CEO Ray Leggett said everyone knows someone touched by cancer, and he said his goal is to give patients the best care possible.

“What we wanted to be able to bring to this area are the clinical trials and the protocols just like you would get at UNC or Chapel Hill,” said Leggett.

Leggett said it will cost $35 million to build the center, and all donations help.

The hospital is expected to take 14 months to complete.
