CHOCOWINITY, N.C. (WNCT) – For the past few weeks, crews from the East have been traveling west to help fight wildfires in the North Carolina mountains.
But at the same time, those crews have to make sure there is still coverage to respond to local calls.
Shane Grier with Chocowinity EMS and Fire said crews in the area rely on mutual aid in situations like this.
“Our fire department would roll out, and we have a mutual aid department coming to us until we get on scene and determine whether we need that other department to come, or if we have enough equipment and personnel to take care of it,” he said.
Grier said it is usually the fire marshal of each county who determines how many people and trucks are dispatched and from where.
Grier said no matter what, local coverage isn’t sacrificed.
