Firefighters suggest closing doors to prevent spread of fires

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Firefighters in the east are working to keep you safe should a residential fire break out.

Thanksgiving is the number one day for residential fires.

Greenville Fire and Rescue says you can keep you and your family safe by closing your door before heading to bed. It could be a piece of lifesaving equipment if a fire starts in your home.

“Heat always rises, smoke always rises, until it levels off or meets the ambient temperature in a room,” said Lt. Mervin Taylor, Greenville Fire Rescue. “So with a bedroom door open, the temperature of a room could reach 1,000 degrees in less than 3 minutes. With a bedroom door shut, in three minutes that same room is only reaching 100 degrees.”
