Zika no longer a public health emergency

INTERNATIONAL (WNCT) – The Zika virus outbreak is no longer an international public health emergency. That’s according to the World Health Organization.

It said that is does not mean Zika may not be a problem where you live, but on a global level the spread of Zika is under control. Zika is spread mostly by infected mosquitoes and can cause birth defects in unborn children.

The World Health Organization said it will now create a technical committee to handle Zika research and efforts going forward. Right now, there is no vaccine or medicine to treat the virus. Avoiding mosquito bites is still the only known prevention.
