BAYBORO, N.C. (WNCT)- A Grantsboro man is charged with attempted first degree murder of a law enforcement officer after almost running over a Pamlico County deputy Wednesday.
Around 8:00 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop. Craig Aaron Laughinghouse, 33, of Grantsboro was the passenger.
Laughinghouse was wanted by the Sheriff’s Office on outstanding warrants.
During the course of the traffic stop, the driver got out of the car and deputies attempted to take Laughinghouse into custody. That’s when Laughinghouse pulled away from deputies, ran back to the car and jumped in the driver’s seat.
One deputy chased Laughinghouse and tried to enter the passenger side of the car to stop him. Laughinghouse then put the car in reverse and attempted to run over the deputy. The deputy then jumped inside the car to avoid getting hit and Laughinghouse drove off with the deputy inside.
Laughinghouse drove east on NC 55 for about 2 miles before losing control of the car and hitting a utility pole.
A second deputy was chasing in his patrol car and arrested Laughinghouse.
The deputy in the car with Laughinghouse had to be cut out by fire personnel. He was transported by EMS to Carolina East Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Laughinghouse was also transported to Carolina East Medical Center, where he was treated and released to the Sheriff’s Office.
Laughinghouse was transported to the Pamlico County Detention Center, where he was charged with one count of attempted first degree murder of a law enforcement officer and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Laughinghouse was also served with outstanding warrants for habitual felony larceny and and habitual felon.
Laughinghouse will make his first appearance in Pamlico County Court Friday.
