AYDEN, N.C. (WNCT) – The holiday season is upon us and one group in eastern North Carolina is working to make sure our troops feel the love.
“We know it’s always hard to be away from home,” said Barbara Whitehead, NC Packs 4 Patriots. “Anyone has a problem being away from family and friends during the holidays, but if you’re deployed in a combat zone, in a foreign country, and you don’t have access to your favorite meals, your favorite songs, your favorite decorations, it’s especially hard.”
That’s where NC Packs 4 Patriots comes in. The non-profit is Santa’s little helper, carefully crafting gift boxes full of holiday favorites.
“We want to make sure that we’re sending those touches and tastes of home to our troops,” Whitehead said.
Those touches are donated by businesses, churches, and individuals from across eastern North Carolina. Eventually, the packages make their way to troops around the world; each gift a treasured piece of the home front the men and women are fighting to protect. The package planning starts early and continues through December.
“We start our Christmas in September, so we have to start staging our donations,” Whitehead said.
The purpose of the packages is to remind the troops what they’re fighting for and thank them for their time and service.
“Sometimes it’s a little bit tacky the way that they’re decorating,” said Whitehead. “You see them stringing lights wherever they can string it, but hopefully it puts a smile on their face.”
NC Packs 4 Patriots still needs donations for troops, and they are always looking for postage to send the donations.
