ECU students help Greenville high schoolers through college app process

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – College application week continues across our state.

While high school seniors rushed to get all their free applications in, some students had help Wednesday.

East Carolina University students made their way to South Central High School Wednesday afternoon to guide students through the application process.

It’s all part of ECU’s Geared Up program.

ECU student Jonathan Owens is a member, and he said seniors sometimes accept college students better than their own teachers.

“It helps students break the barrier between adults and a child,” Owen said. “We play the middle ground. We play that role model of someone that can be easily talked to.”

Geared Up isn’t just helping with college applications.

Organization members volunteer all across the area, for the entire school year.
