Backpack Awareness Day aims to reduce load on backs of middle schoolers

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – It seems like backpacks keep getting heavier. And Tuesday, some students got to put that theory to the test.

ECU Occupational Therapy students held Backpack Awareness Day for middle schoolers at the Oakwood School. They weighed kids with and without their backpacks to figure out how much they were carrying.

“There have been about 7,000 students or people who go to the hospital for backpack-related injuries and so it is kind of a big problem,” said Mary Jessup Gooden, ECU Occupational Therapy student.

The heaviest backpack they measured Tuesday morning was more than 20 pounds. It should only weigh about ten percent of a child’s body weight.
