JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Three hundred flags lined the walkway at Northside High School in Jacksonville Thursday where students spent the day honoring veterans in a special fundraiser.
For the past two weeks students sold each flag to members of the community, raising $850.
In a special ceremony on Thursday, students presented that money to the USO.
“It was actually fun selling these flags because we got to meet a lot of new people and learn their stories,” said Brooke Gruber, a junior at the high school.
“A lot of times when they come home it’s easy for them to feel less important, and we really want to showcase that,” said Dejha Nixon, a senior. “Even if they’re not with us they’re still in our hearts and that they are important in the community.”
For the students in the community, the flags are a symbol hitting close to home.
“Veterans day is very important because we can show pride and honor in our country and everything that everyone who has ever served has done for our country,” Gruber said.
