GREENVILLE, N.C. – Eric Tyler blasted a three-run home run in the seventh inning, while Turner Brown collected a team-high four hits leading Gold to a 7-5 series-clinching win over Purple Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium during the 2016 Purple-Gold World Series.
Hunter Hood (1-0) picked up the win for Gold (2-0) allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout in 2.2 innings of relief. Sam Lanier got the start surrendering three runs (all earned) on five hits in 4.1 innings and Matt Bridges notched the save tossing a scoreless eighth frame with one strikeout.
Joe Ingle (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits with a pair of punch outs in 3.1 relief innings. Davis Kirkpatrick gave up three runs (all earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 frames.
Brown led four Gold members with multiple hits joining Spencer Brickhouse, Tyler and Jake Washer who each added a pair. Tyler Edwards led the Purple with four hits and scored a pair of runs, while Luke Bolka (2 RBI) and Travis Watkins had two base knocks.
Gold jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first behind an RBI single from Brickhouse and a RBI sac fly from TJ Riles.
Riles RBI ground out in the third pushed Gold’s lead to 3-0 before Purple answered with a pair in the bottom half of the frame on Bolka’s two-RBI single.
Purple (0-2) knotted the game at three-all in the fifth on Brady Lloyd’s RBI fielder’s choice that plated Watkins before scoring two more in the sixth taking its first lead of the day, 5-3. Charlie Yorgen’s two-RBI triple down the right field line scored Andrew Henrickson and Edwards.
But Purple’s lead wasn’t safe as Tyler blasted a three-run shot to left field plating Brown and Dusty Baker in front of him for a 6-5 advantage in the top of the seventh.
Tyler drove in his fourth run of the day in the eighth inning on a RBI double to left field scoring Baker.
The Fall Classic will conclude Sunday, Nov. 6 with a 1 p.m. (ET) scheduled first pitch.
