GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Greenville Convention Center. Residents from across Eastern North Carolina are getting in the spirit of giving by helping students while shopping at the weekend event.
From gifts and decorations to Eastern North Carolina staples, the Down East Holiday Show has it all. But aside from preparing residents for the holidays, the event gives back to the community. Proceeds from the show finance scholarships for Pitt Community College.
“It helps and impacts our lives so tremendously,” says PCC scholarship recipient Sommer Heyward. “You’re impacting our future, our success.”
Sommer Heyward is studying to become a nurse. Her scholarships make it possible for her to work towards her goals by providing essentials.
“It helps with your books, your supplies, all the things you would need during college,” says Heyward.
Scholarship recipients will be on hand at the show all weekend, working to ensure the event goes off without a hitch.
“It means a lot to me because I’m able to give back to the foundation that was able to give me my opportunity to go to school and to support other students,” says scholarship recipient Dylan Justice.
Those who are benefiting from the event say this opportunity is something they greatly appreciate and goes further than money.
“It gives me a lot of great leadership experience and training,” explains Justice. “It gives me a sense of pride and I get to be a face for the college for PCC.”
There are over 180 vendors at the event which runs through Sunday. Tickets are $7 at the door.
