Kinston holds 16th annual veterans celebration

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – With Veteran’s Day coming up, Kinston community members gathered at the city’s Walk of Honor Friday afternoon for their 16th annual veteran’s celebration.

The event is dedicated to the men and woman who served in the military, and 34 new names were added on the walkway this year.

Vietnam veteran Ralph Smith said he wished younger generations came to events like the celebration.

“Kids today do not understand what sacrifices have been made for their freedom that we have today,” said Smith. “The blood that has been shed; the heartache’s not only on the veterans but the families back home.

Friday’s event kicked off the “Freedom is not Free” week in Lenoir County.

A tribute show will be held at Grainger Hill Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m., and there is a parade Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
