Greenville breaks ground on bypass meant to connect region

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Greenville and state leaders gathered Thursday for the city’s southwest bypass groundbreaking.

When completed, the 12-mile freeway will wrap around the west side of Ayden and Winterville, ending at the U.S. 264 bypass.

Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas said the bypass will have a major impact on the local economy.

“This stretch of road will translate into billions of dollars of investment,” said Thomas. “I couldn’t be more excited how it connects us better to our entire region. It’s going to be a huge windfall.”

The bypass should be completed by June 2019.
