Carteret County to recount 5,300 ballots after equipment failure

NEWPORT, N.C. (WNCT) – The Carteret County Board of Elections will be recounting 5,300 ballots beginning Friday at 9 a.m.

Elections director Sharon Lewis said staff discovered a PCMCIA card and a tabulator had failed at the Fort Benjamin Park one-stop voting site in Newport .

That card holds the votes from ballots after they have been scanned, and the votes on that card are not retrievable, said Lewis.

The card held all votes cast from October 20 through Wednesday at that location, and Lewis said there is no known cause for its failure.

All 5,300 ballots are accounted for. They will be manually entered into a tabulator Wednesday at the Carteret County Board of Electoins office.
