Cooper keeps outraising McCrory in N Carolina governor race

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Democratic gubernatorial nominee Roy Cooper expanded his fundraising and spending advantage over Republican incumbent Pat McCrory in the final months of an expensive campaign that polls say remains very close.

Cooper’s campaign says it raised more than $9 million in the last reporting period before the election covering nearly four months, compared with nearly $5.3 million by McCrory. Cooper also outspent McCrory — $17.6 million to nearly $10 million.

Cooper has been outraising McCrory since early 2015, benefiting from donors unhappy with the state’s conservative shift and most recently McCrory’s decision to sign legislation limiting LGBT rights.

Polls have shown either Cooper slightly ahead of or statistically even with McCrory. An Elon University poll of likely voters released this week shows the race is a dead heat.
