CARTHAGE, N.C. (WNCN) — Southern Pines police arrested 20-year-old Malik Rashad Crawford Saturday night in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed a 12-year-old girl and injured a 3-year-old boy.
The 3-year-old is now in stable condition and is still being treated, police said.
Jalinda Campbell, 12, and Kyleigh Graham, 3, were sitting on a porch outside the apartment where they both lived when the shooting happened on Friday, according to police. The shooting took place at about 3:49 p.m. at 714 West Michigan Avenue, police said.
Crawford, whose address is the Super 8 Motel in Aberdeen, is charged with accessory after the fact and is being held on a $300,000 bond.
More than 200 people attended a vigil at a Southern Pines home on Saturday evening to remember Jalinda.
A photo of Jalinda was placed on a chair and surrounded by candles and a Teddy bear and butterfly.
“Family is a bond that has been broken that will never be put back together,” said Jalinda’s dad, Greg Harris. “She would be the daughter that anyone would be proud of.”
Police said the shooting was not random and people at the home knew the shooter. Police also said the investigation revealed that the drive-by-shooting had an intended target, but both victims were innocent bystanders.
Southern Pines police detectives are still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the Southern Pines Police Department at (910) 692-7031 or the Crime Tip Line at (910) 693-4110.
