New Bern moving forward with demolishing neglected downtown hotel

NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – New Bern is moving forward with demolition of an abandoned hotel on Broad Street. The building has a history of neglect and disrepair.

In 2014, Kepri Hospital, LLC purchased the building for $184,000 with plans to renovate it. However, code violations quickly began to stack up. Today, there is about $29,000 worth of fines on the building, which has become an eyesore in downtown New Bern.

Earlier this year, the city tried to obtain a demolition order for the building, but Kepri Hospital, LLC sued. The company was seeking a court injunction so they could keep the building.

That request was rejected, and they had 30 days to appeal the decision. The deadline has now passed, and the city will move forward.

“This has been a long process and I think we are all looking forward to some conclusion,” said Mark Stephens, City Manager. “The condition of the building is unacceptable. It’s unsafe and it has been an eyesore to our community for too long.”

The demolition will cost  about $398,000. Demolition will likely take place within the next 90 to 120 days.
