GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – It’s a big weekend in Pirate Nation, as tens of thousands are heading to Greenville for ECU Homecoming and Halloween weekend.

This is one of the city’s busiest weekends all year. Up to 50,000 fans are expected to pack the stands at Dowdy-Ficklen stadium for Homecoming Saturday and thousands more are expected to flood downtown for Halloween weekend.

ECU Homecoming colliding with Halloween weekend this year means law enforcement officers are stepping up efforts all across the city.

Greenville and ECU Police are working together, they’ve brought in an outside security group, and they’ve asked for assistance from nearby agencies.

ECU Police Lieutenant Chris Sutton has a message for anyone visiting pirate nation this weekend.

“To know what their limits are and to not push themselves beyond those limits because if they’re not able to control their actions, then it limits them in being able to control their safety and each individual person does have a role that they can play in their own safety,” Lt. Sutton said.

Saturday is when they’re expecting to see the most people out celebrating Halloween and that’s also game day, so expect heavy traffic throughout the city.

New this year, there are food vendors available in uptown during homecoming, catered to the student population. Yet GPD Officer David Bowen says their efforts expand well beyond that area.

“It’s not just downtown we concentrate on. We have plenty of staffing throughout the city of Greenville and we try to focus on areas that have a high concentration of ECU students,” Officer Bowen said.

They’ve made some changes to ECU Transit to accommodate for the large crowds colliding. Find those by clicking here.
