Snow Hill man charged with embezzling from American Legion

SNOW HILL, N.C. (WNCT) – A Snow Hill man has been charged with embezzling money from the American Legion Shirley Hill Post 94 in Greene County.

William Ray Bell, 67, of Snow Hill was found in Tennessee and extradited back to Greene County on Monday where he was charged with embezzlement by public officers or trustees, according to Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith.

The Sheriff’s Office began investigating the case in July 2016 and said they discovered Bell had taken an undisclosed amount of funds from the American Legion.

Bell had served as the finance officer for the post since 2005.

Bell is currently in the Greene County Detention Center in lieu of $50,000 bail.

He is due in court Friday.
