KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – A North Carolina teacher faces charges for having a sexual relationship with a student.
The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office arrested Timothy Bennett over the weekend. The 39-year-old is charged with one count of Sexual Activity with a Student and one count of Crime against Nature.
Investigators say the charges stem from allegations Bennett engaged in sexual activity with a student while he was teacher at South Lenoir High School.
Deputies say Bennett worked at South Lenoir during the 2015 – 2016 school year. He left the high school in August of this year. Deputies say he currently worked for Wake County Public Schools.
Investigators say after Bennett left Lenoir County, communication between him and the student continued.
Bennett was taken a Lenoir County Detention Center and given a $40,000 bond.
Sheriff Ronnie Ingram says there is no evidence that Lenoir County Public Schools or South Lenoir High School had knowledge of the incident.
“This is another unfortunate case of a teacher taking advantage of a young person who is not yet prepared to make adult decisions. Teachers are in positions to mold our children. This is one of a small number of public servants who compromise the public’s trust placed in them,” said Sheriff Ingram, “This teacher along with any other public servants are not above the law and will be held accountable in the court system.”
Anyone with information regarding this case or any others involved should contact the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office at (252) 559-6100.
