KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The Kinston/Lenoir Parks and Recreation Department and the American Red Cross are passing out 250 flood kits to help Lenoir County residents with the clean-up process.

“When you look outside it looks like a little lake or a swamp,” said Angel Hannibald, whose home was flooded in Kinston. “Like seriously, it was real bad.”

That was the scene for many folks across Lenoir County after widespread flooding from Hurricane Matthew.

Parks and Recreation registered volunteers all day Thursday to help people whose homes were flooded, and the Red Cross furnished the flood disaster kits which included all the necessities.

Hannibald is not looking forward to the clean-up process.

“It’s going to be nasty,” Hannibald said. “We’re going to need those trash bags.”

Volunteers plan to help clean homes across the county this weekend and Parks and Recreation director Bill Ellis said he knows Lenoir County will recover.

“Eastern North Carolina (has) resilient people,” Ellis said. “You clean up and do the best you can, and you get on with your life.”

If you want to join the nearly 500 other volunteers in Kinston, come out Saturday or Sunday at 9 a.m. to the Woodmen Community Center.
