BELHAVEN, N.C. (WNCT) – District Attorney Seth Edwards announced Friday no criminal charges will be filed against Belhaven Mayor Adam O’Neal.
O’Neal had been accused of buying votes during the 2015 mayoral election.
Edwards said his decision is based on findings by the NC State Bureau of Investigation, which failed to uncover clear evidence tying O’Neal to vote buying.
“Unless we have direct evidence that a candidate bought a vote, such as statements from the voter, or video or audio taped conversations, then all we have is rumor,” Edwards said. “Prosecutions are based on facts, not rumors, and right now all we have are rumors.”
O’Neal has been instrumental in the town’s fight to reopen Pungo Hospital, which was closed by Vidant in 2014.
