Michigan barber has unique program that encourages kids to read

YPSILANTI, M.I. (WNCT) – A barber in Michigan is teaching kids the importance of reading, all while giving them a fresh haircut.

Ryan Griffin said he gives discounts for kids who read out loud while getting their hair cut. He said the program not only gives the kids confidence, but also makes reading cool.

“The kid couldn’t read, so the kid just counted cupcakes for me, but what the kid did was put a book in his hands,” Griffin said. “That’s the important part. The kid put a book in his hands. And the reason that the kid picked the book up is because there were other kids here reading.”

Griffin’s barbershop supplies the books for kids. Most of them center around black characters or black history.
