Pitt Co. sets up donation centers on either side of Tar River

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Pitt County has set up two donation centers on either side of the Tar River, and since they started collecting at 9 a.m. Thursday, they said the response has been overwhelming.

“It’s really remarkable to see the amount of support the community has had up to this point for all of the victims,” said Tim Corley, county engineer. “Really the recovery hasn’t really started yet, and these folks have been great in being ready to go into action.”

Food, blankets, cleaning supplies, toys — the items that have been donated are already starting to pile up at the Taft Family Offices in Winterville.

The county’s other donation site is Mount Pleasant Christian Church in Greenville.

“The purpose of that was really to provide two locations,” Corley said. “Specifically if Greenville happened to be divided, if the county happened to be divided, then people had two locations to bring things to.”

As the county organizes donations, private groups are also collecting and delivering items. Laura Mulkey of the Junior Women’s Association of Greenville said they’ve collected 51,000 items from community members in just two days.

They started their own distribution center after trying to donate to the Red Cross — and learning that they were at capacity.

“We are just here to mobilize and get supplies out to those who need it,” said Mulkey. “Cause this is not today or yesterday. This will be going on for a couple of weeks, and we want to be able to support Greenville

As part of their relief efforts, volunteers with the JWA are actually making deliveries to people’s homes — witnessing first-hand just how much the flooding is impacting people.

“It was unbelievable to see what need our community has,” said Mulkey.

They’re also handing out snack bags to first responders. They said the time and effort it takes to coordinate the donations and their distribution is worth it — knowing they are helping in a time of need.

People are just amazed at what the whole entire Greenville community is doing for them,” said Mulkey. “They are just so appreciative.”
