OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (ECU Media Relations) – East Carolina senior wide receiver Zay Jones has been named among 30 candidates vying for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award in college football.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Jones, who sports a 3.56 cumulative GPA in interpersonal/organizational communications, is a two-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team selection and six-time ECU Directors of Athletics Honor Roll member.
An active member in the community, Jones has devoted nearly 75 hours over the last three years to various community service organizations and projects. In just the last year he has worked with Aces for Autism, SportWorks Ministries, Athletic Trash Pick Up, Ronald McDonald House, Maynard Children Hospital, Dwayne Harris Football Camp, ECU Ladies Football Clinic, Blood Drives, National Food Bank and local elementary schools – totaling 23 hours. Jones has also served as co-master of ceremonies for the 2015 ECU Goldspy’s (an annual awards presentation and ceremony emulating the ESPY’s) and starred in an athletics department promotional video in 2016 entitled Can’t Stop The Feeling of Pirate Pride! On the season, Jones has hauled down a nation-leading 84 passes for 840 yards (10.0 ypc, 140.0 ypg) while scoring three touchdowns. In six games, he has registered five double-triples (catches-yards), which included a career-best 22 receptions for 190 yards at South Carolina. His 22 grabs are the most by an FBS receiver in a game this season and was one off the all-time FBS record.
For his career he has 325 catches for 3,373 yards – both ranking second on ECU’s all-time career charts behind Justin Hardy (2011-14). In 44 games (35 starts) he has scored 18 touchdowns and has recorded at least one catch in 41-straight contests (multiple in 43 of 44 games).
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To determine the final Senior CLASS Award winner, the 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Along with the winner, the 10 finalists will be awarded Senior CLASS Award first- or second-team honors.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January. For more information on Jones and all 30 candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
