Coast Guard monitoring two barges that broke on Hatteras Island

HATTERAS, N.C. (WNCT) – The Coast Guard is keeping busy. They are monitoring two barges that broke free and ran aground on Hatteras Island Sunday.

It happened around Weakfish Drive in Avon. The 140-foot construction barges were moored to the Bonner Bridge in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Matthew.

The barges both contain hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel and hydraulic oil. Local authorities evacuated people from their homes in the vicinity around 2 p.m. Sunday.
