NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – While New Bern remains calm, parts of Streets Ferry Road across the bridge in Vanceboro are blocked off as the road fills with water and continues to rise.
Craven County Fire and Rescue said residents in the area have evacuated, and officials did a safety check early this afternoon and determined no one was home.
Vanceboro resident Teresa Kirby said she wanted to see how high the waters were and worried it was only the beginning.
“The water will come up fast from here and this will be probably underwater with all the water that still has to come downstream from Greenville, Kinston,” Kirby said. “It’s going to get bad fast, so everybody needs to be careful.”
Kirby and her husband lived through Hurricane Floyd, and they said the circumstances are too familiar;
People got through the storm and then all of the sudden the waters started to rise.
Emergency management crews are on standby in both Vanceboro and New Bern, and they have swift water crews ready to go.
